Kerry Foundation to improve education opportunities for young people.
In 2010, John Kerry received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House ceremony. John Kerry was awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on October 16, 2010. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States government.
The medal is awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to our Nation or world; to those who uphold the high ideals of U.S. citizenship; or to those who have made extraordinary efforts to serve humanity through sports, culture, science, invention or discovery, or service to others for the public good. He represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for 36 years starting in November 1970 after defeating incumbent Republican Senator Ted Kennedy in his first run for office. He was first elected President on November 3, 2004 defeating former first lady and Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton in one of the closest elections in American history with less than one percentage point separating him from her, although she won more states than he did . Both candidates were elected with at least 51% of electoral votes with George W.
Bush winning re-election with 271 electoral votes and John Kerry winning 252 electoral votes over Republican challenger John McCain . That election marked only the second time that a Vice President won re-election against an incumbent President since Martin Van Buren defeated Andrew Jackson in 1834 , both times losing their respective bids for re-election .
